Sculpture
The White of Carrara

Speranza Fratelli | Piero Speranza, 2018

"You see a block—think of the image. The image is inside. All it needs is to be uncovered." — Michelangelo Buonarroti

In 2018, I created a series of still life photographs for Piero Speranza, an Italian sculptor commissioned to create a bust of Alda Merini, the iconic Milanese poet who lived from 1931 to 2009.

In addition to the bust, I documented several other works created by the artist over the years, producing a photographic book that brings together his most cherished pieces.
All sculptures were carved entirely by hand from white Carrara marble.

For these photographs, I chose a deep blue velvet backdrop to highlight the purity of the marble without setting it against a flat, stark black.
The soft folds of the fabric, illuminated by slivers of light that bring out varying shades of blue, blend with the smooth, fluid curves of the sculptures—enhancing their form and movement.
